'Maine is behind': Advocates, lawmakers push for statewide rape kit tracking system

Lawmakers failed to get necessary funding despite passing in both chambers.

Senators Jill Duson and Rick Bennett each sponsored bills to create a statewide rape kit tracking system. They each believe their bills should've been no-brainers.

“Our bill really focuses on being a survivor-centered solution for folks who have these kits pending,” Duson said. “There are folks on both sides of the aisle who feel very strongly about this legislation and have expressed that strong support.”

“The systems are already in place. The state crime lab is already geared up," Bennett said. “This is just a ridiculous waste of time but tragically, a miscarriage of justice in the meantime.”

Both bills have been carried over into the next session.
